Architecture festival launches with London’s largest living room
The London Festival of Architecture opened on 20 June with London's largest living room built in the courtyard of Somerset House.
Studio Weave designed the living room installation. It showcased new street furniture designs and formed a drinks reception environment to launch the four-week festival, which runs until 20 July.
The London Festival of Architecture, in association with Design for London, is a celebration and exploration of the city's buildings, streets and spaces. London Mayor Boris Johnson officially opened the festival with a speech outlining his vision for the capital.
Thought-provoking new perspectives on London
The month-long festival includes street installations, exhibitions, guided walks, design workshops and debates. Visitors can also join cycle rides, boat tours of the city's rivers and canals and explore weekend street markets. The activity centres around five key areas or Hubs. Large-scale public events will take place in a different Hub each weekend. Each of the Hubs covers an area with a different character. They are:
- Kensington, Chelsea & Knightsbridge
- Canary Wharf, Stratford & Greenwich Peninsula
- King's Cross, Bloomsbury Fitzrovia & Covent Garden
- Southwark & South Bank
- Clerkenwell & The City of London
The festival involves the work of professionals and volunteers. It aims to provide thought-provoking new perspectives on London. Many of the events are free and open to all.
