ExCeL expansion underway as Mayor lays foundation stone
ExCeL London's next phase of development has begun. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson signalled the start of the building work on 7 October by laying a commemorative foundation stone.
The extension will increase the size of the current venue space by over 50%, taking it to 100,000m² - the equivalent of 14 football pitches. The plans include a link to the Prince Regent DLR station, additional bars and restaurants, underground parking, and the creation of a 5,000-seat auditorium. An official opening will take place in 2010.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The creation of ExCeL London has played a major role in regenerating east London by attracting new businesses and bringing thousands of jobs to the area. Its expansion is just another example of how the 2012 Games are acting as a catalyst for change, to leave a lasting legacy and transform this area of the capital."
An independent study by Grant Thornton has shown that the economic impact of ExCeL London and its new expansion is likely to bring £1.6 billion to the capital by 2011.
The Docklands exhibition and event venue will play a significant role in 2012, playing host to seven Olympic events and five Paralympic events.
ExCeL London Chief Executive Kevin Murphy said: "We are honoured to have support from the Mayor of London for our extension plans. This development will help secure London's position as the events capital of the world through into 2012 and far beyond."
