ExCeL London unveils second phase development plans
ExCeL London has unveiled its second phase development plans. The Docklands venue expects the work to be completed by 30 April 2010.
The £164-million second phase development plans, unveiled on 25 June, include a semi-permanent auditorium for 5,000 delegates.
New conference rooms will accommodate groups of up to 2,000 and a dining mezzanine will host more than 1,000 guests.
Construction work will begin on 11 August. It will increase the venue’s event space to 100,000m².
A world-class venue for a world-class city
Vanessa Cotton, ExCeL London Managing Director – Conferences and Events, said the increase in event space would boost event business in London and secure its position as a leading convention destination. She told a development briefing: "By 2010 we will be a world-class venue in a world-class city."
The plans secured funding from ExCeL London’s new owner – a UK subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) – following the acquisition of the Docklands venue earlier this year.
In May 2006, Grimshaw Architects was appointed to handle the phase two project and to master plan the entire 100-acre campus.
ExCeL London is now entering into internal discussions regarding a third phase development strategy. No details are yet to emerge.
